Last weekend I went to my daughter's Year 11 formal. She'd asked me to take my camera along so I warned her I still hadn't mastered flash photography. I wasn't sure how the images were going to turn out so I played around with the angle of the flash. For the image below, I turned the flash up towards the ceiling in the hope I wouldn't blind them and produce overly-lit subjects. The ceiling was too high for decent bounce light. The result was underlit bodies.
I turned the flash towards my subjects and shot again. It took a bit of tweaking in Photoshop to dim the overly-lit faces. The lower section of their bodies is still underlit, too, but not as much. I'm not too fussed about it in this shot, though, as it draws the attention to their faces. The end result is OK but I'll need to keep practising to achieve better results. I'll look through my camera settings and work out how to get the flash to be less intense. Watch this space :-)
