I was asked to photograph my nephew's 21st birthday celebrations a couple of weeks ago. I think I've got the hang of my new speedlite so was fairly confident I'd get some good shots. I had to make sure I got at least one shot of everyone who attended so started shooting early. People were fairly camera-shy in the beginning but, as the night wore on and the alcohol supply was consumed, guests became quite keen to have their photo taken. That's when I started having fun!
I'm not a wedding photographer. I've been asked a number of times to shoot weddings but I don't like the responsibility. Everyone has bad days and I'd hate for one of mine to be at the expense of someone else's memories. Plus I don't like the style of traditional wedding photography - fake poses, fake smiles.
I don't mind doing 'roving' photography at weddings, though, and was asked to do this at a friend's wedding on New Year's Eve. I love catching special, candid shots the official photographers are too busy to see or shoot.
